the area was called
Chicano
Park.
The park has been made famous by murals that were started by a
group of Chicano artists in 1973.
Today,

murals are now a San Diego Historical site and are
internationally known. The colorful murals are by
artists such as Carmen Kalo, Sal Barajas, Juanishi Orozco,
Berenice Badillo, Victor Ochoa, Mario Torero, Yolanda Lopez,
Jose Montoya, and many others. The famous murals depicted the
cultural history of the Hispanic immigrants and the
Mexican-Americans who make up a majority of the area's
population. In an
effort to offer affordable housing and encourage local
merchants, the area was designated as a redevelopment project
in 1990.
This
has allowed for further improvements to the area with use of
tax funding and provided eligibility for federal grants.

is home to Barrio Logan College Institute a non-profit
organization dedicated preparing the local kids for college.
